Bocca di Magra (Ameglia)

Description

A small touristic centre and residential area in the province of La Spezia, on the border with Tuscany. It is part of the Cultural Park of Val di Magra and the Land of Luni. Known for being chosen as a Summer residence for many writers and intellectuals, the town has become a main center with a very important touristic vocation. The port has been equipped with several piers for recreational boating and marine-related services, but Bocca di Magra has an important fishing tradition, the inhabitants still have the custom of buying directly from fishermen on the pier the fish of the day. It represents the ideal place to combine vacation, culture, art and hiking. After the promontory Caprione there are series of small hidden coves and beaches reachable only by the sea and many other special locations situated along the Gulf of the Poets. A few kilometers away is Punta Bianca, known for its high cliffs and crystal clear sea.
The presence of the remains of a Roman ruin, probably a lighthouse at the mouth of the river and a Roman villa beside the sea, evidence without doubt the ancient origins of the settlement. The furniture found on the premises is located to the Museum of La Spezia. Born as a fishing village and always devoted to fishing, it lives on the related maritime and nearby river activities.

Not to miss:
The Roman Villa. The construction took place in stages over a long period between the first century B.C. to the IV century A.D. It is located on multiple levels that slope towards the sea. The best preserved part is a spa that features a brilliant and surprising heating system obtained with a wood oven.
The Pillar is composed of two huge boulders stacked one on each other, are probably the ruins of a pier or a beacon signal used by the Romans, now incorporated into a fully equipped beach facility.
