Conio (Borgomaro)

Description

It is one of the seven districts of Borgomaro in the province of Imperia, and represents the higher located urban settlement up the valley of the river Maro, nestled at the foot of Monte Grande, near the source of the river Impero.
The town offers a strong medieval imprint and features clear characteristics of this in the attractive church of St. Maurizio with its stone bell tower and the structure of the aisles. The church is located in a secluded area, downstream, probably where the town was originally located, then it was moved to a higher point nearer the castle. Conio still preserves an old washing area for the community with sinks in slabs of slate. Mule tracks and glimpses of great charm complete the valuable heritage of Conio. Tied to the valley of the river Maro, the town shared the same historical events of the area: in the XVI century it belonged to the Savoy who understood and valued the importance of the valley roads. It was merged into the Kingdom of Sardinia after the Congress of Vienna and subsequently into the Kingdom of Italy.

Not to miss:
The charming Church of San Maurizio that preserves the original Romanesque bell tower. It is located downstream of the town.
The Castle of the Counts of Ventimiglia, built as a stronghold, it became a residential mansion. Destroyed by a fire during the Second World War, it still features parts of the walls, that have recently been subject to restoration.
