Description

Domegge is a municipality in the province of Belluno, framed by the picturesque landscape of the Dolomites, located on the right bank of the River Piave where find space the Lake of the Centre of the Cadore region. The municipality, which reaches 900 meters above sea level and includes the mountain ranges of Marmarole, Monfalcone, Spalti of Toro is situated on the border with Friuli Venezia Giulia. There are several hiking and mountain bike trails and there are also two cross-country ski trails.
The Gallic Celtic tombs and artifacts found in the area attest the ancient origins of the center, which was later colonized by the Romans, who built here fortifications to defend the borders of the Empire from the invasions of the peoples of the North. It was under the rule of the Patriarch of Aquileia, unable to control such a vast series of territories, divided the area into fiefs and granted them to various local feudal lords. Then followed a period of influence of the Da Camino, that ruled until the mid-XIV century. Under the domain of the Serenissima Republic of Venice, the town experienced a period of peace and development. The Venetian government ended with the Treaty of Campoformio and after a short period of French and Habsburg domination, the area became part of the Kingdom of Italy.
