Fiesso d'Artico

Nuvoloso pioggia debole 17.9°C
cloudy bit rainy

Description

The town's name seems to derive, for the first part, from the Latin word "flexus" (folded, with reference to the course of the river Brenta), and for the second part, added later, in honor of Angelo Arctico to whom is attributed the design of the artificial cutting of the Naviglio, a minor branch of the Brenta, built to prevent the frequent and damaging floods of the River.
Municipality in the province of Venice, located on the left bank of the stream, the territory of Fiesso d'Arctico is the smallest of the province. An important income comes from tourism, being located in an attractive point of the River Brenta, the center is also famous, after the war, for the production of top quality footwear.
Cited for the first time in official documents that date back to the XI century, the town was also known as an important religious center. Due to its particular location, halfway between Venice and Padua, the inhabitants were involved in several clashes in which they had an important and crucial role. In the XV century it submitted the domain of the Serenissima Republic of Venice and the centre was enriched by elegant villas that still can be admired.
