Description

Municipality in the province of Oristano, located on both sides of the valley of the river Tirso, Fordongianus is a popular thermal spa resort, appreciated since the I century A.D. by the Romans, who discovered the presence of a thermal hot spring (the water flows at 56 ° C and offers beneficial effects on the body). The area is also famous for its quarries of trachyte, often used in the past as a construction material and decorative element for several important buildings.
The area was inhabited since prehistoric times, as evidenced by the presence of the "Domus de Janas"; later the area was colonized by the Carthaginians and subsequently by the Romans in the Republican era, period in which the territories assumed great importance, not only for the thermal baths, but also for its strategic location with the presence of a shallow crossing point over the Tirso, that allowed them to control over the inland populations, that were not yet subjected to the Empire. Under the domain of the Emperor Trajan, the town center became an important "forum", a crucial crossroads of trade routes, whose traces are still visible. In this period it was proclaimed "municipium" and later, "oppidum". Even after the fall of the Roman Empire, under the dominion of the Byzantines, the town flourished and developed. The modern town was built on the ruins of "Trajan's Forum" and became a Bishopric and was assigned to the Giudicato of Arborea. Later it belonged to the Barony of Buschi, until at the end of the XVIII century, the territories were assigned to the family Manca Ledà.
