Description

The town's name originates from the Latin person's name "Laurentius", probably the name of the first Roman land owner. It is a municipality in the province of Belluno, located on a plateau surrounded by a superb green environment and the massifs of the Dolomites, on the left bank of the River Piave, the town of Lorenzago di Cadore, whose territories include those of the Monte Mauria, is characterized by the presence of different watercourses and is located on the border with region Friuli-Venezia-Giulia. The main centre is divided into two distinct urban cores, one older one composed of two "borgate" (districts) , and one more modern one.
The discovery of prehistoric relics attest that the area, on which Lorenzago stands today, has been inhabited since the Stone Age. Other remains evidence the presence, over the centuries, of several populations, such as: the Reti, the Illyrians and the Celts, while later the territories were colonized by the Romans. After the Fall of the Roman Empire, although the area was quite inaccessible, the Cadore area was subjected to the invasions of: Heruli, Ostrogoths, Byzantines, Lombards and Franks. It became part of the Marquis of Friuli and was assigned to the Dukes of Carinthia. Incorporated between the territories of the Patriarchate of Aquileia, it was feud of the Da Camino, who ruled until the first half of the XIV century and that granted the town with a certain degree of autonomy. Subsequently followed a period of Venetian domain, which lasted until 1797, when the Veneto region was conquered by the French army. The following history is similar to that shared by all the other localities of the same province.
