Description

A town of the province of Pescara, famous for its thermal/Spa facilities, located in Majella National Park, Popoli was the most important fortress of the Cantelmo, to whom, in 1259, Charles I of Anjou ceded the village in feud, due to its optimal location of control over the valleys of Aterno, the valley of the Pescara and the valley of the Sagittario area. Evidence of its glorious past are the numerous monuments which enrich the historic center, and among which worth of mention are the following:
- the medieval castle, symbol of the city, built in 1015, it was the residence of Cantelmo until the end of the XV century when the Lords moved to the Palazzo Ducale;
- the Holy Trinity Church, built in Baroque style and preceded by an important staircase;
- the Church and the Monastery of the Franciscans in late Gothic style;
- the Church of San Lorenzo, the oldest in the country, adjacent to Holy Trinity Church, enriched by a baptistery and an altar in white stone of Abruzzo;
- the Church of Our Lady of Grace, from the late XVI century;
- the Palazzo Ducale, built in the late XV century by the Dukes Cantelmo and became their residence, once the military utility of the castle was no longer required;
- the Taverna Ducale, the most famous and oldest building in the main old center, built in Gothic style by the Dukes Cantelmo in the first half of the XIV century. It was used as a tavern, a post office, a coach station and a toll office.
- the Taverna of the University, another coach station for fresh horses, erected in 1576 by the University of Popoli as a direct competitor to the adjacent one built by the Cantelmo.
- the Fountain of the masks;
- the public washing basins ;
- the home of Corradino D'Ascanio, an XVIII century building, where the inventor of the Vespa and the helicopter lived;
- the various noble residences (Palazzo Verna, Palazzo Paulini, Palazzo Muzi, Palazzo Martinez, Palazzo of Horatiis Anelli);
- the XVIII century Civic Tower, with its public Bell and Clock tower, which was the first Town Hall;
- the Municipal Palace and Church of San Domenico, the seat of the current Town Hall.
