Description

Portici is a small town in the Province of Naples, set at the foot of the Vesuvius, on the Gulf of Naples. It is marked by numerous examples of Bourbon architecture.
The symbol of the city if the first section of railway in Italy: the Napoli-Portici branch.
The fine Royal Palace, currently home to the Faculty of Agricultural Science of University of Naples Federico II, was built by Charles of Bourbon between 1738 and 1741.
The large park surrounding it is influenced by French models, with their emphasis on low, continuous, panoramic views. Numerous sculptors and painters adorned and decorated the Palace apartments, among whom, Crescenzo Gamba.
The Portici territory also has some fine noble residences known as, the "Ville Vesuviane del Miglio d'Oro" or the "Vesuvian Villas of the Golden Mile": These are 18th and 19th century residences designed by important architects, delightful buildings with views over the sea and the volcano.
