San Donà di Piave

Description

Municipality in the province of Venice, located along the river Piave, not far from the Venetian lagoon, San Donà di Piave is a town in strong expansion, thanks mainly to its proximity to the tourist resorts of Jesolo, Caorle and the Treviso area.
The area was inhabited since Pre-historic times and permanently in the Middle Ages, due to its strategic location between Venice and Treviso. Granted to the Ezzelini, it shared the same historical events credited to this noble family. In the XV century, under the rule of the Serenissima Republic of Venice, the area submitted a large impetus thanks to the massive reclamation of marshlands, an intervention that was continued even during the XVII century, to prevent the overflow of the Piave. At the end of the XVIII century San Dona di Piave was proclaimed municipality, main center of the County of Treviso, and in 1806 it became part of the Department of the Adriatic. During the Third War of Independence, the territories were scenario of an important battle that ended with the victory of the Italian troops. The reclamation works carried out in the XIX century, radically changed the morphology of the area. During the First World War the town submitted serious damage during the clashes.

Attractions:
- the Cathedral, which was built in the first half of the XX century, on the remains of a previous church ruined during the First World War. It is an imposing building, which is characterized by the presence of a large portico and splendid staircase. The pediment is supported by elegant Corinthian columns and features a series of statues on each end. The porch shades the three entrance doors and a niche that houses a wooden crucifix that belonged to the old building. Inside, the Corinthian columns still delimit spaces, proposing extraordinary color effects on the floor and the all is covered by a barrel-vaulted ceiling. On the inside it features six chapels that preserve, in each, valuable works of art;
- the Parish Church of Chiesanuova, inside which are preserved important masterpieces of the artist Ravenna;
- the XVIII century Villa Ancillotto;
- the Museum of the reclamation of the marshland;
- the Gardens of San Marco;
- the Agora Garden;
- Park Benjamin.
- Park Fellini and other garden areas.
