Description

A town in the province of Matera, located in the Pollino National Park, San Giorgio Lucano is located in a densely wooded area and features several picturesque "calanchi" (badlands). It was built in 1534 by Albanian immigrants that sheltered here to escape from the Muslim occupation in their country, colonizing the area. Later it became part of the feud of the State of Noia (today Noepoli) and then passed under the control of the Pignatelli family.
Not to miss:
- the Cathedral Church of St. Francis of Assisi (XVII century);
- the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Pantano, built in 1560, near the cave where a statue of the Madonna was found;
- the Archaeological areas of Sodano, Pallio, Campo le Rose and San Brancato, that date back to the Greek ages;
- the noble residences, such as: Palazzo La Canna, Palazzo Silvestri, Palazzo Charlemagne, Palazzo Zito and Palazzo Ripa, all built between the XVI-XVII centuries
