Santa Maria Maggiore alla Pietrasanta was built around the first half of VI century as an early Christian basilica; it was named after a holy stone with a cross engraved on it and now inside the church. The Church which stands in the most ancient part of the town was rebuilt in the second half of XVII century on the design of Cosimo Fanzago. It was rebuilt again in the second half of XVII century on Cosimo Fazago's design; with a central plan and the floor in terracotta and Eighteenth Century majolica tiles. The Chapel of Salvatore is of great interest; it stands, next to the façade with a polychrome marble altar and the medieval bell tower of the original church and built with the existing marbles of the pre-existent roman buildings.Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore alla PietrasantaPiazzetta Pietrasanta, 18 Tel. 081 456997Closed on SundayOpen: Mon to Sat Hours: 9.30 a.m. - 6.30 p.m.
